When I walked by a row of cars at CUB, ‘Sarah’ called out a greeting to me in Korean. I was startled… then we struck up a conversation beginning with race and Asian-ness in America, and continued into her life story and convictions.

Wow. She was utterly and completely passionate about what she stood for. I’d never met a homeless person so committed to fighting homelessness as a broader issue. Someone who treats the homeless as their own friends and family.

It encouraged me to continue doing this work, finding out stories and building relationships—because I’m by far not the only one who cares about this issue. It was like fresh air: I felt reinvigorated and ready to keep going.

Sarah introduced me to another friend of hers, saying, “Here’s another Asian you should meet.” (I’ll be sharing her story with you next week). They’re the kind of people you can engage with in conversation for hours and not get bored. That’s what happened to me 🙂
